The story of: Brothers Alfred & Edwin Berry

Alfred (age 24 on ticket number 86, sawyer) and his younger brother Edwin (19 years on ticket 77, a riveter) travelled together in steerage on board the Netherby.

They were the sons of William and Sarah (nee Mead or Meade) Berry. William was a shipwright.

Alfred was born in Rotherhithe, Surrey, England.

Edwin was born in Deptford, Kent, England.

Both brothers initially went to QLD on the City Of Melbourne, but later returned to live out their lives in Victoria.

Alfred worked in the sawmills. He was married to Helen/Ellen McLellan in Creswick, Vic on 3 January 1869, and was buried in Toongabbie Cemetery in June 1933. His daughter Agnes Annie married John Henry Lang, their son John Starkie Lang married Doris Clare Waltham. The second son of John and Doris – Ian George Lang is the father of Heather Lang (the provider of this pages information).

Edwin lived in Victoria, married Eliza Annie Hughes 17 July 1871, and died in 1912 in Northcote. He is buried in Coburg Cemetery.

Hi have just discovered this site, my great great grandfather and his brother aged about 18 and 20 were aboard the Netherby, they were Edwin and Alfred Berry. Edwin my gg grandfather not only survived but married and became a father of 11 children 8 girls and 3 boys, one of which was my grandmother. They lived in East Gippsland Victoria.
