George Leake
Massingham
The story of: George Leake Massingham, 16 yrs.
Continuing George's story: This page is about his life as a photographer, starting in Queensland then moving to Victoria. He specialised in portraits and landscapes and much of his work is retained in the National Library of Australia archives, including an incredible series of portraits of all the existing original colonists in the Geelong region (see way further below) - an amazing preservation of history. What I liked as I was researching George - was his sense of humour as seen in many of his advertisements for his photo studios.
George: his career
Many of George's photographic works are held by state and federal archives. Some examples below from State Library's of Queensland and Victoria.

The oldest examples I could find were these three: 1875, Marian Dinah Blinco in Toowoomba, the Hodgson boys in Toowoomba, and Jacob Stumm in 1876 in Toowoomba QLD.

In the slideshows below I have included examples of his portrait and landscape works, mostly taken in Geelong and one portrait in Bendigo. Some in Deniliquin at the races.

State Library of Victoria records also show his studio address as 102 Moorabool Street, Geelong, between 1889 and 1894
Landscapes and other

George's career as a travelling (then settled) photographer; documented below in articles and advertisements. Earliest starting in 1874. Image heavy - wait for them to load.

In the timeline at the top of the page you can see George had a break from Australia between late 1877 and 1880. Returning to London due to ill health in Queensland. Re-immigrating in Feb 1880. His bible notes show plenty of travel through NSW and Victoria, finally settling in Geelong.
Based on these notices in Nov-Dec 1887, the original Geelong studio located "over Franks' Corner", was sold to G Leake of Messrs Leake & Co. While George relocated to his new studio on the corner of Ryrie and Moorabool Streets. I have not yet narrowed down if Mr G Leake is indeed a relative from the Leake side of the family in Norfolk England. It may be likely.
Wouldn't we love to know what the injustice was! I searched but found no further articles on the topic.
This is a great example of the humour I found in many of GLMs ads!
I love equal opportunity in 1888. No wonder George's daughters both worked in his studio later.

OLD COLONISTS PORTRAITS

This project of George's that commenced in early 1896 and carried on into 1897, involved photographing all the original pioneers of the region. All the portraits are retained on Trove.
What an incredible foresight GLM had to capture this incredible history.
And in an amazing co-incidence - one of the men he photographed was Thomas Roadknight - the man who was credited with assisting John Parry after he rowed ashore from King Island. One wonders if their Netherby connection came up in conversation during the
photography sitting!
I have grouped all the references to the Old Colonists' Group portraits together - so they will be slightly out of date order with
the rest of 1896.
I have included the final large group photo and a slideshow of some of them.
Image heavy page - allow time for everything to load as you scroll down.
The finished series below. I have put a sample in the slideshow. You can view them all on Trove courtesy of the State Library of Victoria here.
